Literacy

Literacy, and a love of reading is such an important skill to nurture and foster in students. Reading should happen everyday at home to help build on the skills taught at school. Here are some tips to encourage and foster a love of reading at home:

• read with or to your child before bed, • create a comfy reading nook for your child to read in • make tea for child during reading time • read your own book at the same time as your child’s reading time • share your favourite books with your child • talk about the books you are reading together • visit the public library regularly together (help them choose a wide variety of books (take as many books as they will allow!) to take home to create their own home libraries). -Make reading part of their bedtime routine -have students explore different materials to read, magazines, newspapers, cook books, graphic novels, storybooks, novels Here are some prompts to help you start a discussion about what your student has read.... • What did you do to become a better reader toady? • How did that reading make you more knowledgeable? • What did you learn? • What new ideas do you have? • What do you still wonder about? • What do you need to help you grow more knowledgeable? • What more do you want to learn about this? • How do you plan to keep learning more about this? Audible: A collection of audio books that students can stream directly to their laptop, desktop, tablet, or phone.

Epic Books: Epic is an online children's subscription book service offering immediate, on-demand access to over 35,000 high-quality illustrated books and chapter books for children ages 12 and under.

Story Online: Storyline Online streams videos featuring celebrated actors reading children’s books alongside creatively produced illustrations. Readers include Viola Davis, Chris Pine, Lily Tomlin, Kevin Costner, Annette Bening, James Earl Jones, Betty White and dozens more.

Wonderopolis- is an informational site that helps kids ask and answer interesting questions about the world. Every day, a new "Wonder of the Day" question is posted -- each designed to get kids to think, talk, and find learning moments together in everyday life.
